Yes, the articles on oil are great and up to date (only a year old). The author has good cresentials---(he is a Chemist, retired from a major Oil and Chemical Company, after a career in the Quality Assurance of Fuels, Lubricants, and Chemical products).
The author says:
Many motorcyclists object to the higher prices of motorcycle oils and for convenience prefer to buy automotive oil at their local automotive supply store, which is a GOOD OPTION.
What about the claims by specialty motorcycle oil manufacturers, that their oil is better?
The author says:
"That's a good one. Next time you hear that line, simply ask, "What evidence do you have?" "I've never seen any." "If you do get any, please let me know!" "I don't believe that there is any."
So the author lays the groundwork for supporting the use of ANY proper weight oil. In his tone he supports the thinking, that all modern oils will do the job!!!
**************** THEN HE GOES ON TO SAY THAT SOME TYPES OF OIL ARE BETTER???
HE said:
"My favorite oils and the ones I most mostly recommend for motorcycle use, are the "heavy-duty" oils." "They are commonly misunderstood, and often referred to as diesel oils."
"These heavy-duty oils are rated SJ or SL, plus CH-4. They are currently CLOSER in FORMATION to the MOTORCYCLE specific oils."
Substitution for motorcycle specific! WHY? I here people saying statements such as "the MOST like the original"! So then is not the original the best? Is it not the fact that it all comes down to paying less money, by having an alternative (even if lesser in quality or performance). Something that will get by at a lower price!
Motorcycles are so damned expensive, to start with and riding gear and insurance add to the cost. I feel that the difference in oil price is a drop in the bucket, when comparing the money already spent. Maybe this is not a good place to preach on money, because the SAVAGE is a good bargain. How about other riders that pay $20,000 for their bike----then turn around and replace the parts with CUSTOM?? Also $500 for a helmet and $800 for leathers (gloves, boots, jacket & pants)?
The author says:
"Delvac One would be one of my highest recommendations."------ $8 per qt. at truck stop stores!!---Also---
"Shell with Rotella-T Full Synthetic 5w40. It is not energy-conserving and according to Shell performs competitively with "Mobil Delvac One"-- full synthetic,---- it offers even------MORE PROTECTION than does Mobil One 15w50
My conclusion is that one gets what he pay for and that motorcycle oil is the best---then truck oil--- then high grade auto oil. I will continue to buy motorcycle oil, but I will buy it at an automotive store, not a motorcycle shop.
